Naval appointments and ship movements were publicised along with letters from captains and admirals, prize money for the capture of ships and news from the fleet around the globe. Auctions were held at Taverns and Inns in Cowes, Gosport, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester where ships and cargo were sold along with properties. Bankrupts, and court cases are also listed.

The Portsmouth Telegraph, or Naval and Military Journal was published weekly back in 1801 and is packed with information. Naval appointments and ship movements were publicised along with letters from captains and admirals, prize money for the capture of ships, a submarine trial, bills from the Imperial Parliament and proclamations of George III. The market prices of foods, seeds and hides at the Corn Exchange, London, Smithfield, Newgate and Leadenhall were printed. Auctions were held at Taverns and Inns in Cowes, Gosport, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester where ships and cargo were sold along with properties. Extracts from the Madras Courier, details of bankrupts, marriages, births and deaths were included. The state lottery was advertised along with potions and lotions such as Robberd’s Balsamic Elixer and Cundell’s Myoctonus, the latter being rat poison. Punishment was severe and execution, whipping or transportation to New South Wales for stealing items such as geese and sugar was the norm.(619 images)

Extracts from the “Calcutta Gazette”, details of bankrupts, marriages, births and deaths were included. The state lottery was advertised along with potions and lotions such as Dr. Brodum’s Botanical Syrup and Dr. Arnold’s Pills for venerial complaints. Details of crime and punishment – the latter severe by today’s standards - include a twelve year old received a death sentence for stealing a pair of shoes valued at four shillings.(768 images)
