The light cruiser 'Highflyer' which sank the 'Kaiser Willhem der Grosse' off West Africa, on August 26th, 1914, is a training-ship for Naval Cadets, and forty boys from public schools who became midsipmen las September were on board her at the outbreak of war. Their physical-training instructor, Captain B.F. Trench, of the Marines, was, in 1910, sentanced at Berlin to four years' detention in a German fortress on a charge of espionage. The encounter between the'Highflyer' and the 'Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse' took place off the mouth of the Ore River.
The 'Highflyer' is a 20-knot light class cruiser with a length of 350 feet and a displacement of 5600 tons. She carries eleven 6-inch guns, nine 3-inch, one 3-pounder, two machine-guns, and two torpedo-tubes.
