The rise of the Portsmouth Club in the east end of the county did not follow on the usual lines of slow growth and natural selection. "Pompey," as the team wearing the salmon pink shirts is affectionately named by its admirers, did not grow, it was made. The club is one of the few examples of high-class football-playing organisations created by capital and enthusiasm at a year's notice.
