Each Kelly's directory contains a description of the area, including a brief history, referred to as topography, a street directory, a private residents directory, a commercial directory, a profesional and trades directory, and advertisements. Topography or local intelligence section The image to the right is a typical example of the beginning of a topography, or local intelligence section taken from the Kelly's Portsmouth Directory of 1900. Portsmouth is described as a great arsenal, the largest royal naval establishment and fortress in England, and it occupies the shores of a fine bay, in the English Channel, opposite to the Isle of Wight.
