The Gentlemen, captained by the legendary WG Grace, beat the Players by an innings and 54 runs on July 20th 1899 at Lords. This match was generally played on an annual basis between teams consisting of amateurs, (the Gentlemen) and professionals (the Players), and the first match was in 1806.
