Horses unloaded from ships by a sling, Boulogne 1917 Horses played an important role in the First World War, this image from 1917, shows the British Army in Boulogne with a horse being unloaded from a ship  held by a sling.  It was reported on August 26th 1917 that over twenty thousand horses had already been landed in France during the opening month of the war, including  staff-officers' mounts, cavalry horses, artillery horses, and military train horses.  This photograph, and many more First World War photographs can be found on The Illustrated War News Volume 1 August 1914 CD-ROM, please note that the image shown is of lower resolution and quality than the image on the CD-ROM.
