| Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, German physicist and engineer died on September 16th, 1736. Fahrenheit determined the temperature scale now named after him. His scale was determined by referencing three fixed points of temperature on his mercury thermometer. The lowest temperature being 0°F was from a mixture of ice, water, and ammonium chloride. The second reference point, was 32°F from still water when ice was just forming on the surface. The third reference point, was 96 °F, the thermometer's reading when placed under the arm or in the mouth. The Fahrenheit scale was widely used in Europe until the switch to the Celsius scale, it is still used for everyday temperature measurements in the United States. Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was born on May14th, 1686. |
